Les Charmes Dessus is a site just under the Clos Rousseau 1er Cru on the south-eastern slopes of Santenay. While it’s reasonably close to Clos de la Boutière the terroir is markedly different. Here the red clay and rocky, limestone soils result in aromatic, racy reds of great finesse and freshness. To put it another way, this vineyard is often referred to as a ‘white terroir’ and Marc Bachelet tells us this is always the site that delivers the best acidity in the reds, regardless of the year. Fermented with roughly 25% whole bunches, it’s super-classy and another absolute bargain.
Vinous 90
The 2022 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus has a riper bouquet than the Prarons, with ebullient dark plum and boysenberry fruit, though maybe missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly more austere tannins. It's a bit sultry this Santenay, though there is a lovely touch of orange rind on the dense finish. Needs time.
