This is a blend of multiple parcels of older vines (that are a minimum of 45 years), which all share in common their mid-slope position. There is quite a lot of flat land and heavy clay at the bottom of Santenay which is less good, so this is an important distinction. These vines are all in the upper part of the village on limestone, and make for an aromatic, fresh, juicy and vibrant red wine packed with crunchy red fruit notes, layered with fine-boned, expressive tannins. Delicious.
The Girardin name is well established in Burgundy, dating all the way back to the 1500s; wine is in the family's blood. Justin is the nephew of Vincent Girardin, the renowned winemaker and successful négociant. He’s also one of the most exciting names to emerge in Santenay in recent years, and his wines offer astonishingly good value for money. He inherited his 17 hectare domaine from his father, Jacques, and over the past few years has transformed the wines at this estate. He has been quietly working away in the vineyards and cellar to transform what were rustic, old-style Santenays into fresh, vibrant and exciting red and white Burgundy from some top terroirs across the Côte de Beaune. His holdings also cover Savigny-les-Beaune, Maranges and Pommard and his commitment to allowing the terroir to shine through in his wines is evident. He only grows Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which he works organically. This is a domaine on the rise and Justin Girardin is a name to watch.
